Children and adolescent psychotherapy
Children and adolescents typically begin therapy because those around them—usually parents, relatives, or teachers—notice that “something is wrong”. Common concerns include:
- a sudden drop in school performance or interest in activities
- a traumatic event
- withdrawal or isolation
- aggressive behavior or emotional difficulties
- social anxiety or panic attacks
- loss of a loved one
- parental separation
- low self-esteem
- sleep problems
- regression in behavior (e.g., bed-wetting)
- eating disorders
I always involve parents or guardians in therapy, especially in the initial stages, to gain a full understanding of the situation. The process is most effective when parents actively collaborate, as children’s symptoms often reflect family dynamics. By improving communication within the family, psychotherapy can help meet the child’s needs and build a stronger family bond.
Therapy for children is adapted to their age. Often involving creative methods like play, art, stories, breathing exercises, and mindfulness for kids. In addition to my training in systemic psychotherapy, I have enhanced my expertise in child therapy through Gestalt Play Therapy training.
